On My Desk

So this is the start of a series I am calling "On My Desk." In it I will tell you what books I am reading or about to read and other strange things on my desk.

So as I look around my ever so messy desk these are the books I see:
Seeing God Everywhere edited by McDonald
Raising Goats for Dummies by Smith
Raising Dairy Goats by Belanger
A Nation of Farmers by Astyk
Salad Bar Beef by Salatin
Living in a Wild Garden by Banks
and
Growing and Selling Herbs and Herbal Products by Adams

I see a trend here. Except for the Seeing God Everywhere. That one just sounds paranoid. ;) I also have the paperwork for doing a soil test and sending it to a lab and the bookstore catalog from Countryside Magazine. I am considering getting it. I got their Anthology for 1998 and I am really enjoying it.

Now for homestead news. We sold the huge green composter(thank you Stephen for driving all the way to Vacaville to deliver it). Once the chickens were big enough to eat leftovers, there was not much for the composter to do. And frankly I am more the lazy comforter composter, even turning a handle is too much to ask of me. Sadly, my favorite chicken Annie the Araucana died. We don't know what happened exactly. She seemed to have gotten over her respiratory infection months ago. But the severe change in the weather might have done it. We had temps in the 70's and then dropped quickly to windy, cold, wet and 30's. I found her in the morning so the other chickens hadn't damaged her body. We buried her next to our cat Kami. She was the friendliest of the chickens but also consistently ostracized by them. I will miss her. We are thinking of getting some more chickens this spring but not Araucanas.

A recent addiction I have acquired is to Hapi Wasabi Peas. We can actually get them at our grocery store in Red Bluff and I love them. A little too much actually.

Spring seems to definitely be just around the corner even with this crazy erratic weather. Most of our fruit trees look good and the Persimmon we planted seems to have survived. The swale has reseeded itself to a large degree.
